TGIF

The hard thing these days is recalling what mystical hold John Denver's songs have over me; how they seemed to speak to the spirit in ways that few others do, and how they paint pictures of places (either physically, emotionally or spiritually) so many people yearned to be, states of mind as much as anything, the beauty of a sunrise, the lure of country roads.

John Denver's songs carried him to a pinnacle where few would ever attain. He became an individual recognized around the world, whole phrases of his songs implanted in people's memories, sunshine in my eyes makes me cry, take me home, country roads, you fill up my senses like a night in a forest.

But in reality, he was just like anyone, filled with pain, sadness and often conflicted. In his autobiography, he recounted of personal incidences on a tenth-floor balcony in London with the thought that he would jump to his death, use of marijuana, acid and cocaine as well as the numerous infidelities on the road.

Denver received the Albert Schweitzer Music Award in 1993 ``for a life's work dedicated to music and devoted to humanity," an award that received far less notice than his drunken-driving arrests. That is, to Denver's mind, one more expression of this cynical age, and also why his sun-tinted music no longer is so popular, at least in America.

It was said that Annie's song was dedicated to his wife, even after they split up and went their separate ways. This song will always hold a place in the deep recesses of my old sentimental (although slightly jaded) heart. It brings back beautiful albeit painful memories of the "one which got away". (There are certain things you do in your life with an element of risk and you have to be willing to pay the price.)

ANNIE'S SONG (John Denver)

You fill up me senses like a night in a forest
Like the mountains in springtime, like a walk in the rain
Like a storm in the desert, like a sleepy blue ocean
You fill up my senses come fill me again.

Come let me love you, let me give my life to you
Let me drown in your laughter, let me die in your arms
Let me lay down beside you, let me always be with you
Come let me love you, come love me again.

INSTRUMENTAL VERSE

...Let me give my life to you
Come let me love you, come love me again.

You fill up my senses like a night in a forest
Like the mountains in springtime, like a walk in the rain
Like a storm in the desert, like a sleepy blue ocean
You fill up my senses, come fill me again.

Starting 2009 with a light heart...

This song is useless and the lyrics so annoying to the point where it keeps repeating itself in some vicious loop, the melody pop-ish and "upbeat" compared to the songs I normally listen to, those who know me well have been saying that this song is simply not my style. The tune is so happy that its quite disgusting. And even as I tend to agree with them, I can't help but post this up. Unbelievable, I am such a sham!

Happy New Year ( ABBA )

I've decided to start the TGIF series again, thanks to a friend who shared this video with me. The words are simple; the melody, sweet; the moment, tender. A floodgate of nostagia burst open when I heard this song after what seemed like ages,
Shakespeare was right "If music be the food of love, play on.."

TGIF

I can't change what happened recently, or really even the circumstances behind it. If I'm realistic, I'll even admit I wouldn't change my opinion if I could, since it's all part of bringing me to the next stage of my life. Does it suck? Yes. Do I feel hurt and mad and frustrated and shitty? Totally. I went so far as to say, "WTF" to my mom when she was telling me about how I could improve myself.

But that's not why I'm here. I'm here to share with you a song because it's TGIF. It cheered me up, and reminded me of how lucky I really am to be me, even if I'm far, far, far from perfect:

TGIF...

I rarely remember my dreams when I wake up.

This morning was an exception, I remember a sliver of a dream that I had very early this morning, just before I woke up.

I was with a small group of people in a business-seminar type setting. Someone was leading us through a vision exercise.

I have led and been led through these types of exercises many, many times.

The language used is usually along the lines of,

"Where would you like to be in 2 (5,10 etc.) years? What does it look like?"

"How does that compare to your current reality?"

"What do you need to do to get from here to there?"

The language used in my dream was very different.

In my dream, the facilitator asked, "Tell us about your true reality?"

I was the first to share "When I'm asked this question, I'm often hesitant to answer. I think it's because I'm afraid of what I will have to sacrifice in my current reality in order to achieve my true reality."

The others were very supportive and encouraging about this response.

I continued. Saying with clarity and confidence,

"My purpose for being here is to fully explore and cherish the connections between people."

Let me point out that when I said "my purpose for being here", I wasn't referring to this particular place or event. I was clearly referring to my purpose on this planet. My purpose in this life. In my dream I had no doubts about what I was saying, and I knew exactly what I meant.

Now that I'm awake, I feel there is a message there somewhere, but I'm a little fuzzy on exactly what that is.

TGIF..

Well, it's been a long week. And I know I made many promises and some of which didn't come through. But then, you have to understand that when things are in a turmoil, promises do get tossed by the wayside.

The things I want to say; to specific people, to no one in general. I want to hop on a plane and fly across the Asia to be there for someone who probably doesn't even need me anymore. I want to go for an interview that says, yes, you're fantastic, and we want to actually give you what you're worth. I want the doctor to be honest when they say, this shouldn't hurt, and just admit that it's going to be worse than anything you can possibly imagine. Most of all I want to say things to him that are swirling around in my head, things that I know that should be better left unsaid. I want to be able to say things, and have him understand like he thinks I don't.And I want it to be real and for it to still be here. And I hate the things I cannot say.

But most of all, I want to say I'm getting there. I'm just taking my time.

Here's Lykke Li with "I'm good, I'm gone".

TGIF (my theme song, if I ever had one or two or three, hmm or maybe even four, five...)

Sting "Inside"
Love me like a baby, love me like an only child
Love me like an ocean; love me like a mother mild
Love me like a father, love me like a prodigal son
Love me like a sister, love me like the world has just begun
Love me like a prodigy, love me like an idiot boy,
Love me like an innocent, love me like your favorite toy
Love me like a virgin, love me like a courtesan,
Love me like a sinner, love me like a dying man."

Good Charlotte "Hold On"

Hold on if you feel like letting go. Hold on it gets better than you know. Don’t stop looking you’re one step closer. Don’t stop searching. It’s not over. Hold on…

Beatles "Long & Winding Road"

The long and winding road that leads to your door will never disappear. I’ve seen that road before. It always leads me here. Lead me to your door…

R.E.M. "At My Most Beautiful"
I read bad poetry, Into your machine. I save your messages, Just to hear your voice. You always listen carefully, To awkward rhymes, You always say your name, Like I wouldn’t know it’s you, At your most beautiful

John Mayer "Comfortable”
She thinks I can’t see the smile that she’s fakin’, Poses for pictures that aren’t bein’ taken. I loved you, gray sweatpants, no makeup, so perfect. Our love was comfortable and so broken in. She’s perfect, so flawless. I’m not impressed. I want you back.

Coldplay "The Scientist"
Come up to meet you, tell you I'm sorry, You don't know how lovely you are, Tell you I set you apart, Tell me your secrets, and ask me your questions, Oh lets go back to the start. Running in circles, coming up tails, Heads on a silence apart.

TGIF .. (Thank God, It's a Friend)

I met someone early this year. By chance. It turned out to be a good thing. A really good thing. This person is intelligent, funny, sensitive and he tunes into the same wavelength as I do. Although he does veer towards the heavy trashy music (that I would not listen to, whereas I'm listening to more pretentious sounding Brit bands) , I'm still glad that this friendship works.

Normally, I make acquaintances wherever I go but I don't make friends that easily. The reason being that I am anally particular about whom I share my life stories with. However, I must say that this new friendship turned out to be awesome. ( I feel like a giddy sophomore in high school whenever I say that word - awesome! ) .

So this week's video is dedicated to my new friend. You are a terrific person and don't ever let anyone tell you otherwise. You know who you are! Although I must say that it is beginning to creep me out whenever the same thoughts occur to us at the same time. *shivers*

TGIF

A very early MTV staple that reminds me of my high school boyfriend's basement (he had cable, I didn't). We liked the song so much we would stop whatever we were doing long enough to watch the video. Because it was so high-tech and cool, (then) obviously.

And now you find yourself in '82.

Ice ice baby…All right stop collaborate and listen Ice is back with my brand new invention Something grabs a hold of me tightly Flow like a harpoon daily and nightly Will it ever stop yo I don't know

That’s right. I know all the words.... Still ... to this day.

I was on the way to work this morning, when this song came on the radio….naturally I had to turn it all the way up and sing along.

I have no pride.

TGIF

There were times in my childhood when I became so frustrated with things that almost nothing would make it all better. When I would get that way I would lock myself into my room with my mom's old 8-track player and listen to ABBA until the world made sense to me again. The Grease soundtrack was also heavily employed, as well as the theme song to Hawaii Five-O. Now I usually just hole up wherever I can get free refills on beverages and drink Diet Coke until I am ready to add another chapter to my existence.

ABBA is one of my most treasured guilty pleasures in life. I thought it was so beautiful how Frida and blondie blond Agnetha (the other one I so dearly wanted to be) would sing together in harmony. As for Benny and Björn, those two dudes were like Swedish pimps. Who would know that this Swedish supergroup had a hidden agenda to take over the world.

You may joke that they were the inventors of Mentos pop, but did you know that they are the creators of everything super catchy and addicting since the '70s? Yes, it is true. They did unleash Mentos upon us, but that was just the beginning. The sinister plot to rule the world does not stop there. Benny and Frida unleashed their demon spawn (*lol*) Ace of Base upon us in the early nineties with devastating results. Agnetha and Björn decided that they should contribute as well and gave birth to Aqua. It was in these spawns that the seeds of their demise were sown. Not having obtained the secret of immortality, ABBA have not been able to trust their progeny to carry out their diabolical plan into the future, due to Ace of Base's and Aqua's lack of staying power or ultimate coolness.

We have hope in the Scandinavian countries' ever vigilant metal movement to keep ABBA's influence and power in check. This is what I've noticed: It's a war between two extremes in this region. Either you have super happy/catchy groups like ABBA or super downer trip to hell black metal bands like Gorgogoth and Mayhem there. I've fought on both sides of the battle and end up going back to Liverpool with the Fab Four. Every once in awhile, though, I make my way back and see what each side has been up to since the last time we met up. I've recently done my rounds and ABBA is doing OK. They need to watch out for a Finnish band, Insomniom, though. They're evil. Well, it's all evil, really.

Having said that, it is important to note that The Cardigans are not related to ABBA, although some have speculated such. Oh, and glow sticks are the fecal product of all blond-haired and blue-eyed pop princesses. If this post was not up to regular Senorita standards, well, you can chalk it up to me finishing up a project due this morning and running into a super-cool ex boyfriend at the supermarket. Yes, after this event I will be better able to do my monkey chores. I now have a vision and an action plan. Watch out world!

TGIF -

Semalam hanya semalam
Kenangan memanggil-manggil
Pulanglah sayang pada ku
Ku ingin mengubat hati yang rindu

Semasa, dulu ‘pabila
Kita yang masih percaya
Betapa indah bercinta
Ku tanya ‘Mengapa perginya dia?’

Hilang tetapi bagaimana?
Tinggal harapan yang membara
Ku doa agarkan lagu
Menyusuk jiwa mu

Di sebalik mentari pagi
Pasti ‘kan kembali
Izinkan ku menyanyikan lagu ini…

Sudikah engkau menanti
Marilah kita menari
Lupakan hati yang sepi
Semoga semalam selamanya

*

Hilang tetapi bagaimana?
Tinggal harapan yang membara
Ku doa agarkan lagu
Menyusuk jiwa mu

Di sebalik mentari pagi
Pasti ‘kan kembali
Izinkan ku menyanyikan lagu ini…

Sudikah engkau menanti
Marilah kita menari
Lupakan hati yang sepi
Semoga semalam selama-lamanya
